Note: This guide explains the standard setup flow for Trezor devices. It intentionally avoids asking for or showing any secret recovery words, PINs, or passphrases. Follow the official prompts on trezor.io/start as you go.
Overview
Setting up your Trezor is a short ritual that establishes long-term safety for your crypto. The main stages are: obtain the official software, connect the device, install firmware if prompted, create a new wallet (or recover an existing one), write down the recovery seed safely, and choose local protections such as a PIN and optional passphrase. A thoughtful setup takes time, and that is precisely the point: protect the future by being deliberate now.
Step 1 — Start on the official page
- Open https://trezor.io/start in your browser. This ensures you download the genuine Suite and get current instructions.
- Prefer the desktop Trezor Suite app for a slightly more robust experience. The page offers both desktop downloads and a browser option if needed.
Step 2 — Install & open Trezor Suite
Download the version for your operating system and install it. Launch the app and choose “Get started”. If you choose browser mode, the flow will be similar but does not require a desktop install.
Step 3 — Connect your device
Using the cable that shipped with the device, connect your Trezor to your computer. The device screen will light up and the Suite will detect it. If prompted to install firmware, allow the installation — genuine firmware is necessary and is delivered through the Suite. Installing firmware is normal and safe when you are on the official site.
Step 4 — Create a new wallet (recommended for new users)
Select Create new unless you already have a recovery phrase you intend to restore. Creating a new wallet generates a fresh recovery seed — this is your backup and must be stored physically and privately.
Step 5 — Record your Recovery Seed (do this offline)
The device will show a sequence of words — the recovery seed. Important rules:
- Write the words on paper (the printed card provided is ideal).
- Never photograph or screenshot the words.
- Never store the seed on a phone or computer.
- Store the written seed in a safe, separate location (consider a locked safe or a secure deposit).
This recovery seed is the ultimate key. If the device is lost or destroyed, the seed — and only the seed — allows recovery of funds.
Step 6 — Choose a PIN
When prompted, set a PIN on the device. The PIN protects the device itself; it should be memorable to you but not guessable. Avoid sequential patterns or simple repeated digits. The Suite will usually prompt you to confirm the PIN to avoid typing mistakes.
Step 7 — Optional: set a Passphrase for extra security
A passphrase is an additional word or phrase you combine with your recovery seed. It effectively creates a hidden wallet: highly secure but with operational complexity. Use this only if you understand the responsibility (losing the passphrase means losing access to that hidden wallet).
Step 8 — Add accounts & receive a small test amount
In Trezor Suite, add accounts for the coins you plan to use (BTC, ETH, etc.). When you receive funds, always verify the receiving address on both the Suite and your Trezor device screen — they must match exactly. Consider sending a small test transaction first to confirm everything is correct.
Step 9 — Maintain good habits
Keep your firmware up to date but verify update prompts through the official Suite. Avoid entering recovery words into any online form. Share setup guidance with friends and family, but never share secret words or PINs.
Troubleshooting & safety tips
- If the device asks for recovery words during an unexpected dialog, stop and contact official Trezor support — do not proceed.
- Always verify you're on trezor.io. Typosquatting domains try to copy the flow.
- Keep backup copies of your written seed in physically separate secure places when possible.
If you want, you can now proceed to the official setup page and follow the Suite's guided flow — each screen will walk you through the exact actions described above in clear steps.
Open trezor.io/start— A gentle reminder: never share your recovery seed or PIN with anyone. Responsible setup today means peace of mind tomorrow.
